Self Esteem Matters

With many young people suffering from low self esteem, we see the increase of self destructive behaviours including binge drinking, drug taking, bullying and self harm. There are many benefits of helping our young people develop and maintain a healthy self image. During this workshop, students will learn to identify the causes of poor self image and strategies they can begin using immediately to increase their self esteem. This is an informative as well as highly practical workshop.

Duration: 1½ Hours
Age Appropriateness: Ages 11 upwards

  • How you can develop a healthy self image

  • Practical steps you can take from today to develop a positive self image

Practical Activity:
Students will make their own positive affirmation cards that will be decorated during the session and laminated for students to keep.

Handout:
An A4 coloured handout will be given to each person to highlight key points of this session and to allow students the space to complete a quiz as to where they are presently at with their self esteem levels.



Bully Tactics

Bullying, in its many forms affects most children at some point in their lives. During this informative and practical session, we discuss the many types of bullying- including some examples that students may not identify as bullying. We discuss factors involved as to why a person may choose to bully others, with a key element of this workshop being students working in small groups to read through and discuss bullying scenarios and come up with their own key strategies. This is an excellent workshop that really gets students thinking about their behaviours and to think before they act!

Duration: 1½ Hours
Age Appropriateness: Ages 11 upwards

A double page A3 flyer is given to each student to help them to retain and reflect on some of the key outcomes of this session.

NOTE: For older students (particularly Secondary School) we highly recommend running the second session ‘Cyber Bullying’.



Cyber Bullying

Often run as a second session with this workshop is a Cyber Bullying session. As more than 90% of students connected to the Cyber world, cyber bullying is a common form of harassment for young people. This session runs through the various methods cyber bullies use to target someone and key steps that children can take to lesson the risks of being harassed on line. We also walk students through the steps to take if they are being harassed on line.

A key feature of this session includes the 7 minute film Let’s Fight It Together (courtesy of ACMA). This profound film highlights how technology can be misused to make a person’s life unbearable. It will leave your students stunned but with no doubt that cyber bullying does cause real pain and has no place in our society.

Duration: 1- 1½ Hours
Age Appropriateness: Ages 12 upwards

The Next Step! Preparing for High School

For students about to embark on their High School Journey!

Entering High School can be a daunting experience for many young people- however it needn’t be! Presenter Sharon Witt has been working with first year high school students for over 18 years and her key strengths lie in demystifying High School for students and helping them to understand what to expect in the years ahead. Her insight, humour and stories will leave students with a sense of reassurance and a tool box for starting this next step with ease.

Note: This session can be run longer and Sharon can help facilitate a complete orientation day program including helpful Drama games, group getting to know you activities and other sessions on organisation and homework.

Duration: 1½ Hours
Age Appropriateness: Senior Primary Students

Surviving High School

For students just beginning their Secondary School journey

Entering High School can be a daunting experience for many young people- however it needn’t be! Presenter Sharon Witt has been working with first year high school students for over 18 years and her key strengths lie in demystifying High School for students and helping them to understand what to expect in the years ahead. Her insight, humour and stories will leave students with a sense of reassurance and a tool box for starting this next step with ease. This workshop is valuable for students who have recently begun their High School journey and is best run during Term 1 of the school year.

Age Appropriateness: First year of High School (Years 7 or 8)

 Think Your Way to Success!

"What other people think of you is none of your business”

The power of positive thinking and having a great attitude can never be underestimated. This powerful workshop encourages students to examine the way they think about themselves and their own capabilities. Many young people develop negative mindsets about various elements of their life and education. During this session, students will understand the power of the negative phrase ‘I can’t!’ and learn techniques that will enable them to develop a more positive outlook.

Duration: 1½ Hours
Age Appropriateness: ages 11 upwards

Learning Outcomes:
Discover why our thoughts are so important and can be used in both a positive and negative way
Why developing positive self talk is an important tool for life
How your own attitude can make all the difference in school and life

Practical Activity:
Students will make their own positive affirmation cards that will be decorated during the session and laminated for students to keep.


Valuing your Strengths!

Identifying and developing our strength can lead to greater self esteem in life. We have all been given a variety of gifts and talents to use in life- that is what makes us all so unique! For many young people, identifying their key strengths can be difficult. During this practical session, students will be encouraged to identify their specific strengths and to understand that even though we all may have different strength areas- we need diversity in the world.

Duration: 1 Hour
Age Appropriateness: Senior Primary- Secondary students

Learning Outcomes:

  • For students to understand that we have all been created as unique and special individuals with a rich diversity of strengths and talents.
  • That although people may have different strengths, doesn’t mean that any are more important than others
  • How utilising our strengths can in turn, work to develop a positive self image

Practical Activity
Students will identify their key strengths during this session and make a ‘strengths bracelet’ which will identify specific strength areas by colour guides. This will be a positive reminder to students of their identified gifts.


Achieving Your Best!

Goal setting for Life

Goal setting is one of the greatest skills that young people can learn. It is a skill that can be used throughout life and helps us get to where we want to go in life, be it completing a school assignment or making the State Basketball team. During this interactive and highly motivating workshop, students will hear of one young man’s mission to achieve his ultimate goal, and the incredible lengths he took to achieve his dream.

Duration: 1 ½ Hours
Age Appropriateness: Senior Primary- Secondary students

Learning Outcomes
For students to understand the importance of setting goals.

Practical Activity

Students will identify some specific goals for the year ahead at school and the next five years.

Handouts
Each student will receive a full colour A3 double page flyer containing key points, quotes and cartoons from today’s presentation. There is also space for students to write their own goals to take home and keep.


No Body’s Perfect!

In a word where the Media have become an even stronger voice in our girls’ ears- this workshop aims to uncover some of the pre conceived ideas we have about what body perfection means. Adolescent girls are bombarded daily with images of celebrities, pop stars and models in every area of the media from advertising campaigns to music video clips. This eye opening workshop helps demystify some of the norms of perfection thrust upon our girls. During this powerful time together, girls will discuss some of society’s ideas of perfection for our girls, including critically evaluating a variety of female images. One of the key points of the presentation involves the girls viewing images that demystify the art of digital retouching of images in the media. It will leave girls shocked and stunned that they have been so mislead by the idea of ‘perfection’.

Duration: 1 ½- 2 Hours

Age Appropriateness: Senior Primary- Secondary students

Learning Outcomes

  • Why body image has become such an issue for our girls and why they need to develop a stronger inner voice.
  • For students to understand the importance of understanding where they get their benchmark for body image- and how this has been vastly distorted over many years.
  • How images of the ‘perfect body’ for girls has changed over centuries
  • How the media use digital retouching technology to make over 40 changes to the average image before going to print
